Burger King Scholarship

Burger King is a world-wide hamburger and fast food chain that opened its first store in 1953.  Originally known as Insta-Burger King, the company has its headquarters in Miami-Dade, Florida. The company was founded by Keith Kramer and Matthew Burns who were inspired after seeing the original McDonald’s restaurant in San Bernardino, California. A year after the first two Insta-Burgers  were opened James McLamore and David Edgerton purchased the company and renamed it Burger King. The company has been owned by several entities since and is currently owned by a handful of companies with the largest portion owned by Brazil’s 3G Capital. Burger King went public in 2002 and now has more than 15,000 restaurants in 100 countries. It is one of the most recognizable brands in chain restaurants and its King mascot is equally as popular. Nearly half of the Burger King restaurants are located in the United States and 99% of the restaurants are individually owned as the business operates under a franchise model. The menu originally sold only burgers, french fries, sodas, and milk shakes but the menu has expanded greatly and new items are regularly being introduced. Burger King is a company well known for its charity work and has two primary foundations to carry out its charity. One foundation is the Have It Your Way Foundation which focuses on ending hunger and malnutrition and to increase disease prevention by providing colleges with money scholarships and the other is the McLamore Foundation which also gives scholarships to students in the United States and its territories. The McLamore Foundation has given millions of dollars to students in need and thus allowed them to achieve their dreams of graduating from college.

The Burger King Scholarship from the McLamore Foundation was established in 2000 to honor the memory of James W. McLamore, one of the co-founders of Burger King. Last year the foundation distributed over $2.7 million dollars in scholarships and over the course of the past 16 years it has given away over $25.3 million. James McLamore was known fro his integrity, exemplary citizenship, entrepreneurial spirit, high standards, and commitment to education, all of which are traits looked for in the recipients of a Burger King Scholarship. Applicants must submit a personal essay, references, and a completed application form after registering on the scholarship website. Chosen scholars are then granted between $1,000 and $50,000 to put towards their college tuition and expenses. Scholarships are granted to qualified students and are awarded without regarding, race, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, or national origin. The scholarships are awarded to Burger King employees, their spouses, and their children in the United States and Puerto Rico with the goal of donating $1,000 for every Burger King in the United States which would add up to a total of $7 million annually.  Application forms can be accessed on the website starting in October and must be submitted by the end of December. The scholarship is open to high school seniors pursuing a four-year degree and Burger King employees taking non-degree courses in accounting, language courses, or computer classes.
