The Harry S. Truman Scholarship is offered to students form The Truman Foundation, which is a federal memorial that is dedicated to honoring Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President of the US. The foundation itself is made up of and governed by what is known as a Board of Trustees. These trustees are appointed into their positions by Congress and the President. The foundation has a $55 million trust fund within the US Treasury and there are a handful of employees and public servants who help with the selection process of a new winner.
The Truman Foundation was originally started as a trust agency and the money used to fund scholarships and operations was mainly from Congress.
Truman was a well-known and liked President, who was one of the major turning points for foreign affairs. In fact, Truman engaged in different international foreign policies designed to protect the US.
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship was first introduced in 1975 and it was created as a way to honor those college students who had demonstrated a willingness to serve in a public role and also become a leader in public policy.
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship is not just focused on awarding a student money to go to school, but the scholarship focuses on choosing those students who deserve the award. This is not an easy to obtain scholarship and is quite competitive. This is a merit-based scholarship, which means that you need to meet certain eligibility requirements BEFORE you are awarded it.
Below, we will go over some more details about the Harry S. Truman Scholarship itself.
About the Scholarship
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship, often just referred to as the Truman Scholarship, is a competitive and merit-based award. The foundation receives and reviews over 600 applications EVERY year for this award.
The scholarship is awarded to US citizens or US nationals who are attending a university or college and have at least a junior-levels standing. The scholarship is meant for those students who are preparing to enter into a graduate or professional school. Students must be seeking a career working in the nonprofit or government sectors.
The scholarship amount is up to $30,000 and will be applied toward any of the approved types of graduate studies within the US or even abroad.
The 2017 deadlines for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship have not been posted as of yet; however, the foundation expects the dates to be close to the same dates as the 2016 deadlines. The 2016 deadline to apply was February 2, 2016 with a finalist confirmation date of February 25, 2016. The finalists were announced on February 26, 2016 and Regional Panel Reviews took place from March 4, 2016 to April 8, 2016.
When it comes to your application, you want to make sure that it stands out. While this is a merit-based scholarship, your merit alone will not win you the award. It is important for you to take time to write a personal statement and make sure that it stands out above the rest. The Truman Foundation recommends that you are creative with your statement and that you think about WHY you want to work in your chosen public service career.
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship is awarded to those students who show exceptional grades and write a great personal statement. Once the committee has chosen the winner, the awarded amount will be dispersed to the school of the student’s choice.
