Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarship

Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarship, presented by Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show, is a renewable award with a total maximum value of $4,000. The gift-aid is intended for current undergraduates majoring in floriculture, horticulture or a related field of study. Candidates must complete an online application and with it submit a letter of recommendation. In place of a standard essay, a submission of photos or a project description of any example of a personal horticulture or floriculture project. Preference is given to those  within the interiorscape sector. The scholarship deadline is Mat 31, 2017. You can find more information online.

Flag House Scholarship

The Flag House Scholarship Award consists of one scholarship in the amount of $1812 for a high school senior intending to pursue a college education. Candidates must submit a completed online application and prepare in advance a 250 word essay and have that ready to submit at the time of filling the application since it is only submitted through the online application. The essay cannot be a separate attachable document. The essays are judged on the six traits of excellent essay writing which are idea organization, word choice, sentence fluency, voice, and conventions. The writing prompt asks students to analyze and respond to the question of freedom for the life of a willfully indentured servant who worked for Mary Pickersgill, a flag sewer in 1810 Baltimore. The scholarship deadline is March 25, 2017.

Lisa Higgins-Hussman Foundation Scholarship

Lisa Higgins-Hussman Foundation Scholarship offers one $2,500 award to an individual whose life has been touched by cancer either because they or an immediate family member was afflicted by the disease. Applicants must have been between the ages of 15-39 when the sufferance was occurring. In order to be eligible, the student must be a U.S. citizen and plan to attend an accredited college or university in the U.S. Recipients agree to organize and oversee a bone marrow registry drive in collaboration with specified organizations. Candidates must submit an online application, submit a doctor verification form or a death certificate. An essay and letters of recommendation are also required. The scholarship deadline is March 11, 2017.

Marilyn Yetso Memorial Scholarships

Marilyn Yetso Memorial Scholarship awards $2,500 to one student who has lost a parent to cancer or has a parent currently afflicted with the disease. Applicants must prove financial need. Candidates should submit an online application, letters of recommendation requests an essay and doctor verification or death certificates all at the same time. Junior League of Baltimore Young Woman Voluntarism Scholarship

The Junior League of Baltimore Young Woman Voluntarism Scholarship offers one $1,000 award to a high achieving female, graduating senior who has a rich and extensive resume of volunteer and community service and who in planning to enroll in an accredited two or four-year college or university in the fall. Applicants should submit an online application as well as a college acceptance letter, a 250 word essay discussing a meaningful volunteer experience, and two letters of recommendation. The scholarship deadline is April 15, 2017.
