Starfleet International (SFI), founded in 1974, is the official Star Trek movie franchise fan club for trekkers around the world and with a 4,500 person following, it’s also the largest. The organization began offering scholarships to their members in 1990 and has been able to maintain a $5,000 a year endowment first, through star-donated film memorabilia which was auctioned off and now through fan donations. SFI offers scholarships in five categories that can encompass; business, education, the arts, medicine engineering, languages.
There are five yearly scholarship awards valued $1,000 each. Applicants may be a senior in high school with the intent of enrolling at an accredited two-year vocational/technical school community college, or a four-year college or university. Applicants can also be currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students, but they must have been a member of SFI for at least a year before applying. According to SFI, the chances of actually getting a scholarship are high since it’s quite typical during certain years to not receive any applications for certain categories. Scholarship applications are voted on by a panel of judges and winners are announced at the annual International Conference each summer. Here is a list of scholarships that may fit your need:
James Doohan/Montgomery Scott Engineering & Technology Scholarship
Qualifying applicants are either intending to or currently majoring in engineering or its related fields, including computer sciences.
DeForest Kelley/Dr. Leonard McCoy Memorial Medical & Veterinarian Scholarship
This award is intended for students majoring in human or animal medicine including but not limited to nursing, pre-med, physical therapy, veterinary medicine and the tech specializations in their respective fields such as surgical, radiological and vet techs.
Gene Roddenberry Memorial/Sir Patrick Stewart Scholarship
Interested applicants should be heading for studies in the arts. The award is reserved for aspiring writers, dancers, actors, filmmakers and the like.
Armin Shimerman/George Takei/LeVar Burton Scholarship
This broad range award is meant for students of business, education and those interested in studying languages.
Space Explorers’ Memorial Scholarship
A miscellaneous award to cover student’s talents and passions not mentioned by the scholarships above. The Scholarship is presented in honor of the all the beloved astronauts of the Apollo, and the Shuttles Challenger and Columbia as well as Russian cosmonauts that have perished during space exploration.
Interested students should prepare a complete application package that includes the completed STARFLEET Scholarship Application, three letters of recommendation—one of which must be from a current member of STARFLEET who has achieved a status of Captain or higher, and an official transcript. Applicants are required to craft a two-page personal essay detailing the reasoning for applying for the scholarship, a short resume of their activities on the STARFLEET, and sell as membership activities including employment, sports, clubs and volunteer experiences.
